Trustees

Governance

Trustees are the people who are legally responsible for a charity. Generate has 4 trustees. They make sure that Generate is doing what they say they will, are acting according to the law, and are looking after their money properly

Chair – Grace Sylvester

As a trustee for over a decade and currently serving as Chair to the Board of Directors, Grace is a devoted sister and carer for one of  Generate’s own members. Her lived experience of the practical, social and emotional challenges that impact access to choice and equality, aligns with Generates mission- to generate equity, choice and opportunity for people with learning disabilities, to live life fully. Grace combines her earlier commercial experience as an entrepreneur, with her professional practice as a qualified integrative psychotherapist. Currently supporting carers and families, Grace also loves music, singing and leads a weekly choir for older adults, living with cognitive decline.

Trustee – Robert Murphy

I am a qualified social worker and for sixteen years managed the Community Mental Health Team for an Inner London Borough Social Services Department.
In this management role I was, and remain, committed to the development and provision of statutory, voluntary and independent services and resources designed to meet the needs of people diagnosed with mental health difficulties and people who have learning difficulties.

I worked with many housing associations and voluntary organisations as well as the statutory services and agencies to create and support the residents of a whole variety of housing schemes with the aim of generating independent living as far as possible. This involved recruiting and managing social workers, community care officers, and occupational therapists, as well as supporting the voluntary organisation committees, housing association staff, and private landlords/ladies.

All my work reflected my commitment to challenging and changing discriminatory attitudes, values and beliefs in relation to policies and practice. I trained and worked as a generic social worker, and also trained senior and middle managers in effective communication in staff supervision which focused on developing empathic skills and knowledge.

In addition, I supervised learning mentors in two sixth form schools for a further sixteen years. The mentors supported sixth form students who were experiencing emotional or practical difficulties with their education
