This week is Mental Health Awareness Week from the 12th May to 18th May and the theme for this year is community.
It is a week for events to raise awareness of mental health conditions and treatment and encourages people to be open about their mental health by taking part in conversations.
This year’s theme is about the power of community, being a part of a safe and supportive community is important to our mental health and wellbeing.
A community can be a group of people who live in the same area, a group of people who go to the same club and do the same activities or a group of people created around having the same interests, values of beliefs.
People do well with strong connections making life more meaningful and exciting for them, these can reduce social isolation and help tackle poor mental health.
Here are some ways that you can get involved in your community:
Spend time outdoors, you can go for a walk with a walking group, do some exercise including jogging or spend some time around nature with other people.
Do an activity that you enjoy with people who enjoy that activity too.
Meet some liked-minded people who share the same interests.
Join an online community which can include forums and online groups on social media, always make sure that it’s a safe place.
Show a person how much you appreciate them; this can include giving someone a compliment whether it be a friend, family or a stranger.
Take care of your local community, you could welcome a new member of your community.
If you’re struggling with your mental health, you could join a peer support group.
