Generate’s Buddy Scheme offers young people with a mild to moderate learning disability who live in the Borough of Wandsworth up to 48 hours of 1:1 targeted support, spread out over a period of 3 months.
This project offers young people aged 11 to 17 a short-term intervention to work on their goals and to take steps to try and make them a reality.
The main aim is to support choices, give a sense of control and independence and increase confidence and self-esteem.
This support is bespoke to the individual and their needs and has taken many forms such as:
• Accessing leisure facilities
• Tackling isolation
• Finding a positive peer group
• Accessing mainstream activities
• Support to attend youth clubs and non-term time activities
“Isaac now catches the bus to school independently. His buddy Graham is always just a phone call or text away which really re-assures Isaac. Recently Tooting suffered a major burst water main, meaning that buses were not running from their usual stops. This didn’t phase Isaac; he just put into practice what he had learnt from Graham and got on with it. I was so proud of him!”
“Without Generates support, Isaac would still be taking the school taxi every day. This made him really miserable as the taxi spent so much time completing the school run. Now he gets an extra 40 minutes in bed in the mornings, and for a teenager that’s massive.”
