Dementia & Alzheimer’s Awareness 5th September 2024

5th September 2024 the voices forum began introducing our new coordinator to the group. It was a great start with the ice breaker called the red ball of energy where everyone played along.

The session was on Zoom. We began at 6pm waiting for everyone to log in then read out the house rules, before it got started the recording button was pressed.

The house rules were read out and we began to Introduction and after a few minutes of everyone introducing themselves and explaining their hobbies and why it’s important to them.

After the introduction and ice breaker was finished, we moved on to Dementia & Alzheimer’s Awareness.

As the session got to the first question the members were asked if they knew anyone with dementia or alzheimer’s or both?

Sean explained “Yes, my uncle from my mum side has Dementia” he was also asked how long his uncle has had Dementia? He replied  “I can’t remember. I would have to ask my Mum or my Nan

Then Michelle said “My Carer used to come to me, and she used to care for this lady who had dementia, and she was a nice lady. I also know someone else with dementia but don’t want to mention the person’s name”

Nic mentioned one of the Symptoms of dementia which was Memory Loss.

We came across to the ways in treating dementia

Nic came up with a good answer “I would say, some people may need respite, care or a care home support worker to help them, or sometimes they may need 24, 7 care from a carer.”

Well said Nic

Luis said “Respect. The way you treat people the way they treat back basically”

Sean said “I have two things one be patient and if there are early signs of dementia you probably have to like to refer to the hospital to see if it is dementia or not”

After a break we continued with Alzheimer’s and when the members were asked about the subject Nic said “It seems very complex, and it can make you also be a broad spectrum, such as the vessel they can make sure there’s all different types of nature it seems”

Michelle added “Also with alzheimer’s and I presume it can also for dementia. It is where you can forget your family’s name. So, like the father, your son, or whoever the person is that has dementia or alzheimer’s as well as dementia. It could be their son, their daughter, their mother, their father. Uncle not knowing remembering the person’s name.”

The members were asked about how if going to the doctor is the best option for Dementia or Alzheimer’s

Joseph said “Going to Your GP can help. They can help you with your anxieties & Stuff”

Sean said “Maybe actually like just go on the NHS website to see like the symptoms before you go to your doctors because otherwise maybe there can be like some confusion maybe especially like with the symptoms”

Michelle says “But sometimes when people look up their symptoms or think it might be, sometimes it might not be as serious as that, but where they’re looking it up”

Nic said “It’s best not to Self-diagnose”
