Generate Voices Forum Mencap Homes Not Hospitals Campaign

On the 26th of September 2024 Generate Voices had a guest speaker from Mencap Victoria Wright joined us via Zoom at our in-person meeting and presented the homes not hospitals Campaign.

Victoria showed us the presentation and explained about the Winterbourne abuse and how much the Conservative government failed to meet their deadline of getting people with learning disabilities and autism out of mental health hospitals and into suitable homes to meet the needs. In 2012, the government promised to address these failings with their transforming care programme.

Make sure people get the right support in the community. To help stop people going into mental health hospitals and to help get people out.

Over 2000 with learning disabilities or autistic people are being held in inpatient mental health hospitals in England.

We were then showed a video about a young person who had spent 4 years in a mental health hospital link is on the blog.

Victoria showed  a graph was shown to us and in NHS South West London the graph showed thirty one inpatients per million were still in mental health hospitals.

She also mentioned funding in the government giving £121.7 million to community care support between 2023 to 2024. This was given to the 42 integrated care systems (ICS) in England.

Local areas were given different amounts of money.

The members clapped for Victoria some gave questions and she answered them as best she can.

Victoria gave us some questions to give to our local decision makers like the (ICB) Integrated Care Board at the Partnership Board meetings

These questions were

What are you doing to reduce the number of people with a learning disability and/or autism in mental health hospitals?

What have you done to build the right community support? Are there any blocks stopping you?

How have you spent the £3 million you were given for learning disability and autism services?

What more are you doing to make sure people with a learning disability and autistic people can live good lives in the community?

Thank you Victoria and Mencap for coming to our Voices forum and sharing this campaign with us Generate Voices will most definitely get involved in this campaign and it will help with the mental health campaign as well.
