Generate Voices Forum: Understanding Toxic Masculinity
On January 2025, the Generate Voices Forum held a session on Toxic Masculinity, an important and often overlooked topic. The session was hosted by Terry and Tony, with Sean as the presenter. Attendees included Sean, Karen, Michelle, Zahra (Job Coach), and Malacai, with some members joining via Zoom.
Checking In
The session began with a quick check-in. Sean shared that he was doing okay, while Michelle had been busy with work and sorting out tax returns. Unfortunately, Nic and Joseph couldn’t attend.
Ice Breaker
Sean kicked off the session with an Ice Breaker question:
What if your day didn’t go according to plan and you feel stressed what would be your best solution to tackle your stress and why?
- Zahra: It depends on the environment—if at home, a walk helps or go to the gym.
- Michelle: Takes deep breaths to stay calm, sometimes has a cigarette.
- Terry: Thinks of a better plan for the day.
- Tony: If it’s after work, orders a takeaway and relaxes with Netflix. On a day off, enjoys exploring different parts of London.
- Sean: Listens to music.
- Karen: Goes to the park, as she often experiences migraines.
What is Toxic Masculinity?
Sean then asked members what they knew about Toxic Masculinity and what causes it.
- Michelle: Wasn’t sure what it meant.
- Zahra: Felt that it’s not talked about enough in mental health discussions and didn’t know the causes.
- Karen: Also didn’t know what it meant.
- Tony: Explained that there is a stigma that men must always appear tough and emotionless, making it difficult for them to express vulnerability.
Sean pointed out that toxic masculinity can also affect the LGBTQ+ community, reinforcing unhealthy expectations of gender roles. He explained that it often manifests as aggression and rigid male stereotypes, which can negatively impact women, other men, and even children.
Exploring Toxic Masculinity Through a Documentary
To deepen the discussion, Terry played parts of the documentary “How to Be a Man” by Danny Dyer, which explores themes such as:
- Toxic Masculinity tests
- Growing up in a “masculine” environment
- Traits of toxic masculinity
- Misogynistic beliefs and behaviors
The Impact of Toxic Masculinity
The conversation then shifted to the me too movement, which sheds light on how toxic masculinity contributes to harassment and gender inequality.
- Malacai: Reminded everyone that men can also be victims of abuse and that it’s not easy for them to speak out.
- Terry: Shared that people who try to talk about these issues are often silenced, highlighting how widespread the problem is.
- Sean: Emphasized that the #MeToo movement is crucial in bringing these conversations to light.
- Michelle: Agreed but pointed out that some women can also be aggressive or violent, questioning if toxic behavior is exclusive to men. Sean clarified that toxic masculinity can occur at any age.
Terry also shared a personal story about his uncle, who holds outdated views on gender roles and isn’t respectful toward women.
Breaking Gender Stereotypes
Sean highlighted that men can embrace feminine traits if they choose to, and that rigid gender norms shouldn’t define people.
Terry added “That it’s not always other people’s place to confront men about their behavior, as it can sometimes lead to resistance rather than change.
Although Michelle found the topic challenging, she remained engaged and interested throughout the discussion.
Wrapping Up: Looking Ahead
To finish the session, members played a Kahoot! Quiz to test their knowledge of toxic masculinity.
The group also agreed that future meetings should continue in person.
Terry then reminded everyone about the Lewisham Speaking Up Question Time happening the next day, while Tony announced he may take on extra responsibilities in co-managing meetings until another coordinator is recruited.
Next Session: Social Housing
Before closing, Terry announced that next week’s topic, chosen by Malacai, will focus on Social Housing—a crucial issue affecting many people.
Final Thoughts
This session provided valuable insights into toxic masculinity and its impact on society. By challenging stereotypes and encouraging open conversations, the Generate Voices Forum continues to empower members with knowledge and awareness on important topics.
Thank you to everyone who participated, and we look forward to seeing you at our next session
