Voices Forum: Discussion on Vegan Diets – February 13, 2025
On February 13, 2025, Generate Voices hosted another Voices Forum session, this time focusing on vegan diets.
We kicked things off with an icebreaker to get the conversation started. The question posed to members was. If you had to choose a favorite fruit or vegetable, what would it be and why?
Sean, Zahra, Sharon, Malachi, Karen, Carrie, and Jodian.
Each member shared their favorite fruit or vegetable:
- Carrie: “I like okra because it’s good for my arthritis.”
- Jodian: “I like mangoes and avocados. Avocado is great on bread.”
- Sharon: “I like citrus fruits like lemons, limes, and oranges.”
What is a Vegan Diet?
After the icebreaker, we asked our members: What is a vegan diet?
- Sean: “You don’t eat meat, fish, or dairy products.”
- Malachi: “You don’t eat meat or chicken.”
Discussion: The Positives of a Vegan Diet
This was an open discussion about the positives and negatives of vegan diets. Here’s what our members had to say about the benefits:
- Carrie: “I’m not sure, but I know vegans like eating nuts and drinking oat milk.”
- Sean: “I know for a fact that you get more vitamins and minerals.”
- Jodian: “You get a lot of vitamins D, E, A, and C.”
- Zahra: “I think it helps with gut health, as eating less meat improves digestion.”
- Jodian: “One thing to think about is the chemicals in food.”
The Negatives of a Vegan Diet
We also touched on some potential downsides of a vegan diet:
- Zahra: “You don’t get enough protein.”
- Sean: “It can disrupt the digestive system, especially when going to the toilet.”
- Jodian: “Indigestion”
- Karen: “Bad headaches or migraines?”
- Zahra: “Hormonal and health concerns.”
