On the 31st of October 2024 Generate Voices spoke about the topic of transport.
The forum began with the ice breaker asking the members where they would go by train if they won a free seasonal ticket by either train company for example (GWR) Great Western Railway, London North Eastern Railway (LNER), South Western Railway (SWR) etc.
Some mention they would go to Australia to ride on Australian Railways.
Karen said “I would visit Scotland ”
Malachi said “I would like to go to Blackpool to visit family”
After the ice breaker we then proceed with why is transport important for people with learning disabilities.
Malachi said “Traveling on transport is important so you can visit family”
Stephanie said “I think it’s important because you are independent”
We then took a short break thinking about more topics on transport and what issues members experienced. After coming back we carried on and asked the voices members what experiences they had on any public transport.
Luis said “Fighting on a bus and the driver had to stop and called the police”
Stephanie said “A man got violent with a woman and then he got back on the bus ”
Tracey said “People don’t offer their seats (in the front) and I get very tired”
These were very serious experiences.
Leon Said “People getting frustrated when there is no room for them on the bus”
Luis added “I feel safer when I am with my partner or one more person rather than being alone”
Leon added about his experience with the bus countdown device thats at various bus stops around London “I miss it or I have to wait for a long time. The countdown is not working, the wrong bus comes and when the bus I need finally comes it takes longer for me to get to where I am going”
Luis “We need a lot of police around because people have knives on them”
We then discussed what modes of transport that the members use and which would they rather feel safe on
Sean said “I use buses, trains and underground”
Malachi uses buses and trams
Stephanie takes the bus and underground and says “I feel more anxious on the tube”
Leon said “I have a bike and roller skates and i don’t have to wait for the bus”
Sean says “I like to walk”
Karen says “I walked to Generate today”
Malachi said “I walk to Addington village where I have more options to take tram or bus
We then asked the members what modes of transport they used and how they got their Freedom Pass
Karen said “Zac helped me get mine”
Sean said “I had to get a photo taken then fill out an application form for it”
Leon said “My mum did some research and found out I was eligible”
